The tiny Maltese archipelago, located just south of Sicily, includes the main island of Malta, the smaller nearby island of Gozo and the even-smaller island of Comino. Each of the islands has its own "personality" but they all share that special "island mentality" we all sometimes seek in our busy lives. Visitors can plan for plenty of historical sites going back about 5,000 years through the Roman empire, Islamic conquests, Crusaders and the Ottoman empire. You'll also find here lots of excellent restaurants featuring fresh seafood and a lively nightlife. In the summertime, Malta is flooded with European tourists coming for their beach vacations. While Malta is perhaps busier and more cosmopolitan, Gozo is a sanctuary of peace and quiet and uninhabited Comino is used mostly as a diving spot. Malta is part of the European Union, but it's the place one goes for a different European "experience".
